Learning Materials

Learning materials are the foundation of Orbit Classroom's AI-powered experience. Uploaded documents are processed, embedded, and made available to the RAG pipeline so the AI chat can provide grounded, citation-backed answers.

Supported File Types

CategoryFormats
DocumentsPDF, Word (.docx)
PresentationsPowerPoint (.pptx)
TextMarkdown (.md), code files
ImagesPNG, JPG, and other common formats
info

The maximum file size is 30 MB per file.

Uploading Materials

Teachers and admins upload materials within lessons. Each material is associated with the lesson where it was added, but materials can be shared across lessons via reference -- there is no need to re-upload the same file.

All roles (admin, teacher, student) can download materials from published lessons.

Processing Pipeline

After upload, each material moves through an automated processing pipeline:

Upload → Text Extraction → Chunking → Embedding → Summarization

Processing Stages

StageMeaning
PENDINGFile received, queued for processing
PROCESSINGText extraction, chunking, and embedding in progress
READYFully processed and available for AI chat retrieval
FAILEDProcessing encountered an error; review and re-upload
tip

Once a material reaches the READY stage, its content is automatically available to the AI chat within that lesson. No additional configuration is needed.

AI Summaries

Every processed material receives an auto-generated AI summary. These summaries give students and teachers a quick overview of the document's contents without reading the full file.

Draft / Published Lifecycle

Materials follow the same draft/published pattern as other Orbit Classroom content:

  • Draft -- visible only to teachers and admins for review.
  • Published -- visible to students and available to the AI chat for retrieval.
For Teachers

Keep materials in draft while reviewing accuracy. Publishing makes them immediately available to students and to the AI for answering questions.
