Grading System

Orbit Classroom provides a structured grading system with weighted averages, draft/published visibility controls, and per-assignment feedback.

Grade Scale

All grades use a numeric scale from 0 to 10.

Grade Hierarchy

Grades flow upward through the class hierarchy with automatic aggregation:

LevelCalculation
AssignmentManually entered by teacher or admin
Lesson / UnitAuto-calculated weighted average of assignment grades within the lesson
ModuleAuto-calculated simple average of lesson grades within the module
info

Only published assignment grades contribute to the automatic lesson and module calculations. Draft grades are excluded until published.

Draft / Published Workflow

Each grade row has its own draft/published state:

  • Draft -- visible only to teachers and admins. Use this to enter and review grades before releasing them to students.
  • Published -- visible to students.

Publication Options

Teachers can publish grades in two ways:

  • Individual -- publish a single grade row for one student on one assignment.
  • Batch -- publish multiple grade rows at once across an assignment or lesson.
tip

Use batch publishing at the end of a grading session to release all grades simultaneously, avoiding partial visibility.

Exempt Assignments

Assignments can be marked as exempt on a per-student basis. Exempt assignments are excluded from grade calculations, which is useful for accommodations, dropped lowest scores, or excused absences.

Grade Feedback

Teachers can attach text feedback to each assignment grade for each student. Feedback is delivered alongside the grade and becomes visible to the student when the grade is published.

For Teachers

Feedback is tied to the grade row. Draft feedback is only visible to teachers -- it publishes together with the grade.
